Ross is a seasoned adventurer and an expert in exploring the Great Barrier Reef and the tropical north coast of Australia. Growing up in the region, he developed a deep connection with the mountainous coastline and marine life. His passion for adventure led him to become an early pioneer in kitesurfing along Cairns' northern beaches during his teenage years.
With over 30 years of experience, Ross has become a versatile waterman, engaging in activities such as diving, spearfishing, surfing, kitesurfing, hang gliding, and photography.
Ross sees the Great Barrier Reef and its surrounding areas as his "backyard" and believes in seizing every opportunity to create the ultimate adventure for all our guests. His diverse skill set and extensive knowledge of the region make him the perfect guide for guests and scientists exploring the remote Great Barrier Reef coast.
Since its establishment in 2011, Ross has managed and skippered Aroona Luxury Boat Charters, transforming it into the most sought-after tailored experience on the Great Barrier Reef. Beyond providing exceptional adventures for guests, Ross is dedicated to advancing research in the region. He has established long-running collaborations with scientists, contributing to studies on minke whale migrations and behaviors, shark movements, nautilus populations, seagrass monitoring, coral assessments and restoration from Cairns up to the Torres Strait.

Lorenzo Ballarin
Captain, First Mate, Engineer, Dive Instructor & Photographer
Captain Lorenzo Ballarin is a multifaceted individual whose diverse skill set contributes significantly to the success of our operation. He has been in the industry for over 15 years, having started his career as a Dive Instructor, Trip Director and Underwater photographer on a variety of long range live aboard vessels.
His previous experience has equipped him with invaluable knowledge of marine environments, dive and snorkelling locations, safety protocols and customer service. This background has not only honed his leadership skills but has also fostered a deep appreciation for the Great Barrier Reef.
Lorenzo’s passion for the ocean enhances his ability to lead our team effectively and his dedication and attention to detail help deliver our guests a truly memorable experience onboard Aroona.
