We’re thrilled to be heading to the Kimberley for our 2020 annual expedition.
The Kimberley is Western Australia’s sparsely settled northern region. It’s known for large swaths of wilderness defined by rugged ranges, dramatic gorges, semi-arid savannah and largely isolated coastline. The best way to access this incredible area is by boat.
From King George to the Hunter River and down to the Prince Regent River. This will be an Aroona adventure of epic proportions.
Travelling through the Kimberley after the wet season you will discover waterfalls in full flow transforming the pristine wilderness. The King George River plunges over an ancient sandstone cliff into tidal waters, creating the genuinely astounding spectacle of King George Falls – Western Australia’s highest twin waterfalls. These falls are inaccessible by road, making our expedition even more exclusive. The river is of high cultural significance to the Balanggarra people, for whom the falls are the male and female Wunkurr (Rainbow Serpents)

The Prince Regent National Park contains more than half the mammals and bird species found in the whole Kimberley region and more than 500 species of plants. Saltwater crocodiles are large and abundant. You will be visiting Australia’s most remote and beautiful places. Some of the spectacular features include Kings Cascades, Pitta Gorge, Mount Trafalgar, Python Cliffs and the Prince Regent River, which runs almost straight for most of its length, often between near-vertical cliffs.
Your transport to meet Aroona is an adventure in itself. You will travel from Darwin in a Grumman G-73 Mallard amphibious aircraft. It might be named after a duck, but this twin-prop aircraft with its massive 20m wingspan and classic 1940s lines is a flying boat. The highly modified versions of the original aircraft have undergone extensive upgrades and refurbishment with Pratt and Whitney PT6 turboprop power plants, improved avionics, strengthened airframes, and cabin enhancements. Most days it transports workers to the Paspaley pearl farms, but at the beginning and end of your Kimberley adventure it will be your unique access to our remote location.
Your vessel, Aroona is designed for luxury, comfort, exploration and relaxation.
With everything taken care of, you can relax and enjoy the privacy of your boat, fine food and your choice of activities and destinations in the remarkable Kimberley.
